Giant Exits Nickel Project, Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Says: We Will Find Another
Jul 03, 2024Jakarta - The nickel refining project in the Sonik Bay of North Maluku has been abandoned by two major European giants, BASF and Eramet. Indonesia's Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), Arifin Tasrif, has no objections to this.
He stated that if the two companies leave, his party will look for another company. "Yes, if they exit, we will find another," said Arifin on Friday (June 28, 2024) at the Directorate General of Oil and Gas of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in South Jakarta.
Arifin stated that many companies are interested in participating in this project. "Yes, there are many others who want to do this," he added.
Arifin then talked about the nickel business. He said that currently, restrictions have been imposed by the United States, Europe, and Canada. On the other hand, China is the country absorbing nickel.
He also added that due to the weak world economy, the demand for nickel has decreased. "Now let's look at the global demand, with tires from the United States, Europe, and Canada. So far, who has absorbed nickel? Who has absorbed the most nickel? (China) So what do they produce? They do produce cars, indeed, but all this is 'demand has decreased because of economic weakness,' he explained.
